Application of respondent driven sampling in the study on male homosexual population in Jinan city

  • ObjectiveTo explore the feasibility of respondent driven sampling (RDS) for studying men who have sex with men(MSM) in Jinan city, and explore the characteristics of sexual behavior and infection situation of AIDS in MHP. MethodsAn anonymous questionnaire survey was conducted by RDS, and blood samples were collected. The data were analyzed statistically by RDSAT 5.5. ResultsOf the 500 MHP cases investigated, 3.1% were found HIV positive, 46.3% were self-evaluated having male sexual orientation, and 49.9% had unprotected sex. ConclusionThe HIV positive rate was significant higher in MHP in Jinan city than that in other high-risk population. The high-risk sexual behaviors were common in MHP. The intervention must be reinforced to reduce the HIV prevalence.
