Performance of acute flaccid paralysis case surveillance system in Shanxi province, 2004-2007

  • ObjectiveTo analyze the performance of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) case surveillance system in Shanxi province during 2004-2007. MethodsDescriptive epidemiological analysis was conducted on the data by using software of national immunization surveillance information system. ResultsA total of 676 AFP cases were reported during this period. Reporting rate of AFP case for children under 15 years old was 2.02/lakh, the rate of survey within 48 hours after reporting was 99.90%; the rate of collecting adequate stool samples was 94.50%; the rate of timely sample shipment was 98.50% and the rate of timely return of follow-up form was 98.20%. The strains of strains of polio vaccine virus were isolated in 23 of 676 AFP cases with the isolation rate of 3.40%. The sex ratio of AFP cases was 2.62∶1, 2.26∶1, 2.25∶1 and 2.55∶1 respectively and AFP cases in children under 5 years old accounted for 59.51%, 52.29%, 51.40% and 56.91% respectively during 2004-2007. Fully OPV vaccination rate of AFP cases in 2006 was the lowest (75.42%), and that in 2004 was the highest (83.44%). ConclusionThe status of polio-free was maintained in Shanxi province from 2004 to 2007, all the surveillance indicators met the requirement by WHO and the Ministry of Health.
