Epidemiological analysis on 38 rabies cases in Zhaotong, Yunnan, 2008

ObjectiveTo analyze the epidemiological characteristics of rabies epidemic in Zhaotong and provide scientific basis for the prevention and control of rabies. MethodsThe rabies epidemic data and case survey forms in 2008 were collected for statistical analysis. ResultsThirty eight deaths caused by rabies occurred in 2008, in which 37 cases were bitten by dogs，1 was bitten by cat, and 23 cases were bitten by domesticated dogs or cat (60.53% ), 15 cases were bitten by wild dogs (39.47%). More cases were observed in summer and autumn than in winter and spring；most cases were farmers，the ratio of male to female was 3.22:1. Higher incidence was found in the people aged 16-49 years old. ConclusionDogs were the main infectious source of rabies in Zhaotong and rabies mainly occurred in rural area. It is necessary to strengthen the management and immunization of dogs, health education and post exposure treatment.
