Epidemiology of a rabies outbreak

A rabies outbreak with 2 cases occurred in Changshan county during October-November in 2007. The cases were a couple and died, Epidemiological survey indicated that the wife was bitten by their domesticated dog infected with rabies virus and the husband was bitten by the pig previously bitten by the infected dog. Both the wife and husband didnt receive post exposure treatment and the onset of rabies symptoms was at 22 days and 62 days later respectively. Due to the timely post exposure treatment, their grandson who was bitten by same dog in same day with his grandmother had not become ill so far. The effective way to prevent and control rabies is to strengthen the dog management and receive timely post exposure treatment.
