Analysis of influencing factors of risk behaviors associated with AIDS among money boys in Hangzhou, Zhejiang

  • ObjectiveTo identify the influencing factors of AIDS-related risk behaviors among money boys (MB), the men providing commercial sex for male homosexuals, in Hangzhou. MethodsA nationally standardized AIDS-related behavior surveillance questionnaire-based survey was conducted among a total of 206 MBs from clubs, bathhouses and bars. Univariate analysis and Logistic regression was performed to determine the correlation between eighteen factors including the age, education level, knowledge score, sexual orientation, the number of commercial sex partners, and the rate of commercial sex behavior where condoms were never or seldom used. Results25.2% of the subjects did not use condoms in the latest commercial sex with men, and 52.4% never or seldom used in the past six months. As shown by the multivariable logistic regression analysis, this rate raised in those seeking for sexual service in the park, having no previous HIV tests, and having more than twenty commercial sex partners, with the OR value of 7.15(95%CI:1.30-39.25),2.48(95%CI:1.11-5.52),and 2.68(95%CI:1.19-6.02), respectively. In contrast, it declined in those who underestimated the possibility of HIV infection or had the first sex partner a female one, with the OR value of 0.41(95%CI:0.18-0.95) and 0.44(95%CI:0.23-0.86), respectively. ConclusionThe occurrence of AIDS-related risk behaviors was prevalent among money boys. Seeking for places where sex service was provided, no previous HIV test results and large amount of commercial sex partners constituted the risk factors, while the assumption of not infected by HIV and the initial sex partner being female were protective factors. Therefore, behavior intervention associated with AIDS among MB should be performed in the key places such as parks in conjunction with counseling and testing to enhance their self-awareness and self-protection.
