Analysis on the surveillance results and epidemiological characteristics of HIV/ AIDS in Dalian

ObjectiveTo determine the epidemiologic characteristics of reported AIDS cases in Dalian, Liaoning from 1995 to 2008, providing evidence for the identification of the prevalence patterns of the disease. MethodsCase reports of previous years and data derived from AIDS/HIV routine surveillance were statistically analyzed. ResultsThe cumulative number of HIV- antibody-positive cases reached 320 in the duration from 1995 to 2008 in Dalian, plus 20 deaths, including 254 male and 66 female cases. The minimal age of HIV positives was 9, the maximum 68. 67.8 % of the cases were infected through sexual transmission, of which 45.62% was homosexual males; blood-borne infection accounted for 22.81%, and 9.37% transmission route remained unknown. The national HIV-antibody surveillance revealed a negative result among sex workers in 2008, the monitored infection rate zero. On the other hand, the surveillance showed 16 cases of antibody-positive MSM (men who had sex with men), the monitored infection rate 3.99%.ConclusionThe overall prevalence of AIDS in Dalian was low, sexual transmission being the major transmission route. An increase of prevalence was noticed among MSM. Therefore, strict adherence to the current AIDS-related high-risk behavior intervention strategies and intensification of the efforts and scope for the intervention among MSM is the key to the prevention and control of AIDS prevalence.
