Prevalence of HIV infection and syphilis and associated risk factors among people receiving voluntary counsel and test for HIV in Fengtai, Beijing,2010-2012

Objective To learn about the prevalence of HIV infection and syphilis as well as associated risk factors among the people receiving voluntary counsel and test (VCT) for HIV in Beijing. Methods HIV test, rapid plasma reagin test (RPR) and questionnaire survey were conducted among the people receiving VCT for HIV in Fengtai district, Beijing from 2010 to 2012. Results The infection rate of HIV was 2.1%, 1.5% and 5.3% and the prevalence of syphilis was 3.9%, 2.2% and 8.1%, respectively, in 2010,2011 and 2012. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that male, syphilis infection, blood transfusion/blood product use, injecting drug use, sex with HIV positive spouse/sex partner and sex between men were the major risk factors for HIV infection. Conclusion Sex with HIV positive spouse or sex partner and sex between men were the main transmission routes for HIV in people receiving VCT in Fengtai. It is necessary to strengthen the health education and HIV surveillance among them.
