Mumps epidemiology in Yuxi, Yunna province, 2005 - 2007

  • Objective To understand the prevalence and epidemiological feature of mumps in Yuxi and explore prevention and control measures. Methods Descriptive analysis was conducted on the data of mumps epidemic in Yuxi collected from national disease reporting information system. Results From 2005 to 2007, a total of 3145 mumps cases were reported with the annual incidence rate of 48.35/lakh. The disease occurred in every month in a year with the peaks during April-July and during October-December. The population characteristics of mumps cases were obvious, students and children in care settings (5-10 years old) were affected mostly. The sex ratio of the cases was 1.39 ∶ 1. Conclusion Mumps has become one of the major infectious diseases which pose threat to the health of the students and children in care settings. The incidence of mumps is significantly higher than other diseases targeted by EPI program. It is suggested to include MMR vaccination into the new rural cooperative medicare system.
