Retrospective study of the first case of epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis W135 in Fujian province

Objective To conduct retrospective analysis of the etiology of Neisseria meningitides W135 which was isolated for the first time in Fujian in 2006. Methods Epidemiological survey of suspected epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis case was conducted, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sample was taken for bacterial culture. The isolate was identified by biochemistry test and PCR for crgA gene and siaD gene of W135, the drug susceptibility test was performed by Etest method. Results The strain of Neisseria meningitides W135 was isolated from the suspected case which was identified by biochemistry test and PCR. The strain was sensitive to 9 antibiotics including ceftriaxone, cefotaxime and rifampicin. Conclusion The case caused by Neisseria meningitides W135 were less reported in China, this was the first case of Neisseria meningitides W135 detected in Fujian, even in China.
