Analysis of serum lipid, glucose and uric acid levels among medical staff in Lanzhou city, Gansu province,2008

  • Objective The serum lipid, glucose and uric acid levels of medical personnel in Lanzhou City, Gansu Province were measured to provide the basis for bettering health care for medical staff. Methods Medical personnel undertaking annual physical examinations in Gansu Provincial Peoples Hospital from September to December 2008 were recruited for determination of their blood lipid, glucose and uric acid levels with an Olympus AU5400 automatic biochemical analyzer. The results were statistically processed using SPSS 11.0. Results 53.93% of the examined subjects demonstrated abnormal lipid levels deteriorating with age, which declined after the age of seventy. 10.69% and 10.77% of them had abnormal blood glucose and uric acid levels, respectively. Most dyslipidemic participants were associated with triglyceride abnormality, involving 53.76% men constituting a ratio of 38.64%, and 50.36% women constituting a ratio of 37.27%. Abnormal levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were the lowest, involving 12.54% men with a ratio of 8.97% and 13.51% women with a ratio of 10.0%. Differences were present in each proportion with abnormal results between men and women (P0.01). Conclusion The tested medical personnel had high levels of serum lipids, glucose and uric acid, whose glucose levels are higher than those in other industries. It is necessary for medical workers to establish a healthy lifestyle balancing work and rest in addition to proper dietary structure, so as to early prevent the elevation of blood lipids, glucose and uric acid and reduce the occurrence and development of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.
