Characteristics of aged HIV/AIDS cases in Guangdong province reported through internet-based direct reporting system

Objective To understand the characteristics of HIV/AIDS cases aged 50 years in Guangdong province reported through network direct report system. Methods The data (as of 31 August 2009) were downloaded from online HIV/AIDS case reporting system and analyzed by SPSS. Results Of the reported HIV/AIDS cases, the proportion of the cases aged 50 years increased from 2.9% in 2005 to 10.4% in 2009. Heterosexual contact was the main transmission route among them. Conclusion Further study should be conducted on the factors for HIV infection among aged people. It is necessary to carry out health education about AIDS among aged people to increase their awareness of AIDS prevention and control.
