Epidemiology of mumps in Taiyuan of Shanxi province,2007 - 2009

  • Objective To understand the incidence of mumps in Taiyuan during 2007 - 2009 and provide scientific evidence for the prevention and control of mumps. Methods Descriptive epidemiological analysis was conducted on the incidence of mumps in Taiyuan during this period. Results The incidence rates of mumps were 35.84/lakh, 41.51/lakh and 45.96/lakh respectively,which increased year by year. Moreover,the incidence of mumps showed a significant regional difference,which was higher in urban area than in rural area. The disease occurred all the year round and peaked in winter and spring. The cases mainly occurred among children aged 3-10 years (3744 cases,87.46%),The mostly affected populations were students,children in child care settings and children outside child care settings,the cases among them accounted for 57.44%,24.48% and 12.59%. Of the total cases in 3 years. The male and female ratio of the cases was 1.5 ∶ 1. The disease occurred in all districts of Taiyuan,the first four districts with high incidence rates in 3 years were Xinghualing district(24.29%),Xiaodian district(17.36%),Wanbailin district(16.37%) and Yingze district(15.84%). The mumps cases occurred sporadically. The coverage rate of mumps vaccination was 21.66%. Conclusion The mumps incidence rate in Taiyuan was high with obvious regional difference. It is necessary to strengthen the prevention and control of mumps by conduct health education and vaccination to protect childrens health.
