Performance of measles surveillance in Fuzhou, Fujian province, 2009

  • Objective To evaluate the performance of measles surveillance in Fuzhou and provide scientific evidence for measles prevention and control. Methods The analysis on the data of measles surveillance system and notifiable communicable disease reporting system in Fuzhou in 2009 was conducted. Results Forty one confirmed measles cases were reported in 2009. The incidence was 0.61/lakh. The cases mainly occurred among house workers/unemployed persons sporadically, accounting for 37.71% of the total, and 23 cases aged 15 years accounted for 56.10% of total. Measles in Fuzhou occurred from January to September, and peaked during March-July, in which the cases accounting for 90.24% of the total. Conclusion The routine and supplementary measles immunization should be strengthened in Fuzhou and the efforts to improve the quality of measles surveillance would be essential to reach the goal of elimination of measles.
