Surveillance of AIDS among drug users in Wenzhou city of Zhejiang province, 2004 - 2009

  • Objective To understand the prevalence of HIV infection and related risk factors among drug users in Wenzhou, and provide scientific evidence for the development of AIDS prevention and control measures. Methods A total of 3798 drug users in drug rehabilitation center in Wenzhou received questionnaire survey from 2004 to 2009 and blood samples were taken from them for HIV detection. Results Ten drug users were detected to be HIV positive during this period. The annual detection rates were all less than 1%, and the 90% confidence intervals were all less than 2% too. The average age of the drug users was (32.256.52) years, 88.52% of them were aged 20 to 39 years, 76.91% were local residents, and 72.09% used drug by sucking. The proportion of injecting drug users who shared syringes with others declined significantly in recent years (2=16.57, P0.05), but the proportion of drug users using new-type drug increased significantly by years (2=362.47, P0.05). The proportion of drug users to have commercial sex increased significantly (2=74.63, P0.05), but the proportion of them to use condom at each commercial sex declined significantly (2=17.74, P0.05). Conclusion Although the HIV infection level remained to be low among the drug users in Wenzhou, the risk behaviors to spread HIV still existed. More attention should be paid on the use of new-type drug. It is necessary to conduct integrated intervention in this population to stop the spread of AIDS among them.
