Analysis on injury cases visiting sentinel hospital for the first time in Fuyang city in Zhejiang province,2009

Objective To investigate the specific epidemiological characteristics of injury in Fuyang, and provide evidence for the effective prevention and control of injury. Methods The unified record cards were used to register new injury cases in 3 sentinel hospitals in Fuyang. EpiData 3.02 software was used to set up the database and Excel 2003, SPSS 13.0 were used to analyze the occurring site, type, severity of injury and the occupation,sex and age of the injury cases. Results A total of 5818 injury case record cards were collected in 2009. The male to female ratio of the cases was 1.99 ∶ 1.The people aged 15-44 years accounted for the largest proportion (48.92%). The first 3 populations being mostly affected were farmers/fishers (57.25%), migrant workers (16.21%) and students (7.92%). The first 4 occurring sites of injury were working place (38.69%), home (34.99%), street (9.68%) and road (5.45%). The first 5 injuries were falling injury (23.22%), blunt injury (23.08%), animal bite (22.69%), puncture/cut injury (7.87%) and injury in traffic accident (6.91%). The injuries occurred during working time and leisure time accounted for 44.90% and 30.80%, respectively. Most injuries were unintentional ones (95.50%) and the mild to moderate injuries accounted for 61.30% and 36.60%, respectively. Conclusion Injury is still a serious public health problem in Fuyang, which had the obvious characteristics of injury in rural area compared with other areas in Zhejiang. It is necessary to develop suitable prevention and control measures according to the surveillance results in Fuyang to reduce the incidence of injury.
