Incidence trend of malaria in Taizhou municipality in Zhejiang province, 2006-2010

  • Objective To understand the incidence trend of malaria in Taizhou and provide evidence for developing malaria control strategy. Methods Descriptive epidemiological analysis was conducted on the incidence data of malaria in Taizhou from 2006 to 2010. Results A total of 317 malaria cases were reported during this period, including 292 tertian malaria cases (92.11%) and 25 falciparum malaria cases (7.89%); The reported malaria case number declined from 106 in 2007 (the highest) to 17 in 2010, but the proportion of imported malaria cases increased from 86.76% (59/68) to 100% (17/17), the proportion of falciparum malaria cases increased from 4.41% (3/68) to 41.18% (7/17). Conclusion The incidecne of malaria in Taizhou was in downward trend, but the incidence of imported falciparum malaria increased obviously. Routine malaria surveillance should be continued and close attention should be paid to the prevention and control of imported malaria.
