Sentinel surveillance of AIDS in male outpatients in STD clinics in Jiangshan, Zhejiang, 2009-2011

  • Objective To understand the awareness of AIDS related knowledge, behavioral characteristics and related factors in male outpatients in STD clinics in Jiangshan. and provide evidence for the development of prevention an control strategy. Methods The sentinel surveillance of AIDS was conducted in male outpatients in STD clinics in Jiangshan according to the National Protocol of AIDS Sentinel Surveillance. Results In the male outpatients surveyed, the AIDS related knowledge awareness rate was 60.06%, the HIV infection rate was 0.09% and the overall prevalence of 5 STDs was 48.18%. Totally 52.10% of the subjects surveyed had commercial sex, 36.01% had sex with other partners, 0.19% were injection drug users and 0.19% had sex with men. The AIDS related knowledge awareness of subjects might related with their age and AIDS interventions received (P0.01). The subjects receiving HIV test in recent 3 months had less commercial sex compared with those receiving no HIV test (P0.01). Some subjects still had risk behaviors although they were aware of AIDS related knowledge. Conclusion The potential of rapid HIV infection exists in high risk population in Jiangshan. It is essential to provide counseling and conduct HIV test for the outpatients in STD clinics.
