Epidemiology of mumps in Gujiao, Shanxi,2005-2011

  • Objective To understand the epidemiological characteristics of mumps in Gujiao and provide scientific evidence for the development of prevention and control strategies. Methods Descriptive epidemiological analysis was conducted on the incidence data of mumps reported in Gujiao through national disease reporting information system from 2005 to 2011. Results A total of 720 mumps cases were reported during this period with an average annual incidence of 48.30/lakh. Two incidence peaks occurred during 2006-2007 and during 2010-2011. The annual incidence peaked during April-June and during December-January. The incidence in urban area was higher than rural area. The cases in children aged 2-14 accounted for 93.06% of the total. The male to female ratio of the cases was 1.70∶1. The cases in students, children in child care settings and children outside child care settings accounted for 59.31%, 26.94% and 10.00% of the total respectively. Conclusion Mumps is one of the first 10 communicable diseases with high incidence in Gujiao. It’s necessary to take measures of immunizing children aged 2-14 years with live attenuated mumps vaccine and strengthen the prevention and control in schools and child care settings.
