Analysis on groups and serotypes of Shigella in Jinan, Shandong, 2006-2011

  • Objective To understand of the predominant group and serotype of Shigella in Jinan from 2006 to 2011 and provide evidence for the prevention and control of bacillary dysentery. Methods The samples were collected to conduct detection according to the requirements of National bacillary dysentery surveillance protocol. Results S. flexneri was the predominant group of Shigella circulating in Jinan during this period, the strains of which accounted for 72.4% of the total isolates detected, but the annual proportion declined gradually. The B to D ratio was in decline. The strains in F2a serotype accounted for the highest proportion (27.2%), the stains in X and Y serogroups increased in recent years. Conclusion The Shigella in F2a serotype in B group was predominant in Jinan during 2006-2011, the proportion of S. sonnei strains detected increased gradually, suggesting the environment sanitation and personnel hygiene were improved in Jinan. Due to the fact of co-circulating of different types of Shigella, it is important to strengthen bacillary dysentery surveillance in the future.
