Performance of voluntary counseling and testing for HIV in Honghe, Yunnan, 2008-2010

  • Objective To evaluate the performance of voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) for HIV in Honghe, understand the characteristics and HIV infection statuses of the people receiving counseling and testing and provide evidence for the improvement of VCT. Methods The analysis was conducted on the related data collected from VCT clinics in Honghe from 2008 to 2010. Results A total of 21 635 persons received counseling during this period, in which 20 799 received HIV testing, and 2551 were HIV positive (12.27%). The majority of the people visiting VCT were young adults with low education level. More than 50% of the people receiving counseling had history of sex out of wedlock, and the HIV positive rate among them was 9.23%. The highest HIV positive rate was detected in injection drug users (39.16%). Conclusion Heterosexual sex out of marital, IDU, high risk sexual behavior between wife and husband or fixed sex partners were the three main modes of HIV transmission in VCT clinics visitors, Honghe. It need focus to strengthen the VCT clinics capacities from these aspects.
