Abstract
Objective To understand the epidemiological characteristics of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) in students in Taizhou and provide evidence for the pulmonary TB prevention and control in schools. Methods Descriptive epidemiological analysis was conducted on the incidence data of pulmonary TB in students in Taizhou from 2006 to 2010 collected from the local tuberculosis management information system. Results During this period, 610 pulmonary TB cases occurred in students, accounting for 3.17% of the total cases. The overall incidence of pulmonary TB in students was 11.87/lakh and the annual incidence in 2009 was highest (15.79/lakh). The cases mainly occurred in senior middle school students, accounting for 69.67% of the total cases in students. Thirty four TB cluster epidemics occurred involving 205 cases, the attack rate was 11.33%. The high incidence of TB was in April of a year. The cases were mainly detected in patients medical care seeking (42.79%), followed by referral (30.82%), health examination for college (senior middle school) entrance (17.54%) and close contact screening (8.85%). The medical care seeking for TB was delayed in 46.72% of the cases. Conclusion The pulmonary TB case number in students was low in Taizhou, but the incidence was higher than average national level. Additionally the clusters of TB cases were detected and the proportion of delayed medical care seeking was high. It is necessary to strengthen the TB prevention and control in schools.
