Epidemiology of neonatal tetanus in Ningbo, 2001-2011

  • Objective To understand the epidemiological characteristic of neonatal tetanus (NT) in Ningbo form 2001 to 2011 and discuss the strategies and measures for NT elimination. Methods The descriptive epidemiological analysis was conducted on the incidence data of NT in Ningbo from 2001 to 2011 collected from national surveillance system. Results A total of 267 NT cases, including 77 deaths, were reported during this period, the average annual incidence was 0.35 and the mortality rate was 0.09. Both rates were in decline. The cases mainly occurred during 3-9 days after birth and more cases occurred in males than in females (1.66:1). The cases were mainly distributed in the area with dense floating population. Most sick infants were born at home with the help of untrained midwifes. Among the mothers of sick infants, 71.43% received no prenatal examination and 86.76% received no tetanus toxoid vaccination. Conclusion It is necessary to strengthen the management of floating population, especially the women at childbearing age and children, promote hospitalized delivery and conduct tetanus toxoid vaccination in high risk area and in high risk population to eliminate the incidence of NT in Ningbo.
