Causes of injury death in residents in Hangzhou, 2006-2011

  • Objective To understand the causes of injury death in residents in Hangzhou and provide evidence for the development of intervention measures. Methods Statistical analysis was conducted on the death cause surveillance data in Hangzhou from 2006 to 2011 by using Excel and Spss. Results The injury death rate declined by 5.45% during this period. Totally 20 441 injury deaths were reported, the average annual death rate was 52.09/lakh and the standard death rate was 37.30/lakh.The gender specific average annual death rate and standard death rate were 63.16/lakh and 46.87/lakh respectively in males and 40.85/lakh and 27.55/lakh respectively in females.The injury mortality in males was 1.55 times higher than that in females. The injury death rate and standard death rate were 40.26/lakh and 28.41/lakh respectively in residents in urban area and 71.00/lakh and 51.86/lakh respectively in residents in rural area. The injury mortality in rural area 1.76 times higher than that in urban area. The first 5 injury death causes were accidental fall,traffic accident,suicide,other injuries and drowning. The major death causes were traffic accident and accidental fall respectively in males and females, the major death causes were traffic accident and accidental fall respectively in urban area and in rural area. Drowning was the major death cause in age group 0-14 years, traffic accident was the major death cause in age group 15-59 years and accidental fall was the major death cause in age group>60 years. Conclusion Injury has become one of the major deaths causes in the residents in Hangzhou. It is necessary to develop effective control strategies and conduct comprehensive prevention and control according to the characteristics of injury death.
