Meta-analysis on risk factors of HIV infection among drug users in China

  • Objective To evaluate the risk factors of HIV/AIDS infection among drug users in China and provide theoretical evidence for the development and implementation of HIV/AIDS prevention and intervention strategies in this population. Methods Published literatures about the risk factors of HIV/AIDS among drug users in China were collected systematically and the quality of the literatures was evaluated according to STROBE statement. The data were analyzed to obtain the co-OR and 95% CI values, and sensitivity and bias analyses were conducted too. Results Fourteen literatures were selected for Meta-analysis. According to the evaluation results, the scores of 7 literatures were 16, indicating high quality of these literatures. The risk factors with statistical significance were as follows:minority ethnic group, needle sharing, unemployment, injecting drug use and education level 9 years; and their OR values were 3.08 (1.81, 5.24), 4.46 (2.71, 7.34), 1.34 (1.02, 1.76), 3.73 (2.95, 4.70) and 1.32 (1.01, 1.74) respectively. Conclusion The preliminarily analysis indicated that minority ethnic group, needle sharing, unemployment, injecting drug use and education level9 years are the risk factors for HIV/AIDS infection among drug users in China.
