Measles epidemiology and supplementary immunization activity in Taiyuan, 2006-2010

  • Objective To understand the epidemiology of measles and evaluate the effect of supplementary immunization activity(SIA) in Taiyuan, Shanxi province, from 2006 to 2010, and provide evidence for the prevention and control of measles. Methods Descriptive epidemiological analyses were conducted on the incidence data of measles and prevention and control effort of measles. Results A total of 2994 measles cases were reported during this period with the annual incidence ranging from 0.14/lakh to 35.35/lakh, the incidence of measles had obvious seasonality, which peaked during April-June, Seven supplementary immunization activities were conducted in 2008,2009,2010 and 2011, the average vaccination rate reached 98%, From 2009 to 2011 the reported annual incidence was 1.57/lakh, The cases in age groups ≥14 years andU=28.11, PConclusion High quality measles SIA can effectively reduce measles incidence. It is essential to increase the vaccination rate in young children and adults in order to eliminate measles by providing 2 vaccination opportunities for right aged children, particularly migrant children, reducing vaccination gap, conducting SIA and increasing herd immunity.
