Detection of Laribacter hongkongsis in freshwater products in Jiangmen, Guangdong

  • Objective To investigate the contamination status of Laribacter hongkongsis in freshwater products in Jiangmen, Guangdong province. Methods A total of 161 freshwater product samples were collected from three food markets in Jiangmen during July-August 2010. Laribacter hongkongsis strains were isolated by using modified Mac-Lonkey Agar. The positive samples in biochemical tests were further identified by specified PCR. The 16S rRNA of 5 isolates were sequenced and analyzed. Results A total of 20 Laribacter hongkongsis strains were detected from the 161 samples. The overall positive rate was 8.05%. The positive rate was 30.1% in grass carp (19/63) and 1 of 5 tigrina frogs was positive. Conclusion The contamination of Laribacter hongkongensis was detected in freshwater products in Jiangmen, especially in grass carp and tigrina frog. To ensure the food safety, it is necessary for health department to strengthen the monitoring of Laribacter hongkongsis contamination in freshwater products.
