Abstract
Objective To understand the infection status of syphilis among the non-remunerated blood donors in Jiangshan, Zhejiang province, and provide evidence for the selection of low risk blood donors. Methods Treponema pallidum antibodies were detected among 25 450 blood donors with linked enzyme immunosorbent assay in Jiangshan from 2008 to 2012. Results The positive rate in syphilis detection was 0.84% (214/25 450) among the blood donors in Jiangshan during this period, the differences in annual positive rate had no statistical significance (χ2=7.64, P>0.05). The gender specific difference in positive rate had no statistical significance (χ2=1.18, P>0.05). Except the gender specific difference in age group 51-58 years (χ2=4.32, PP>0.05). The age specific difference in positive rate had statistical significance (χ2=22.91,PPConclusion The positive rate in syphilis detection was high among the non-remunerated blood donors in Jiangshan, In order to ensure blood transfusion safety, it is necessary to conduct counseling before blood donation to screen low risk blood donors and collect blood from regular blood donors.
