Epidemiology of sexually transmitted diseases in Huzhou, Zhejiang, 2008-2012

  • Objective To understand the epidemiological characteristics of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in Huzhou, Zhejiang province, and provide evidence for the development of specific control strategies. Methods Descriptive analysis was conducted on the incidence data of STDs in Huzhou collected from national disease reporting information system from 2008-2012. Results A total 29 565 cases of 5 STDs was reported in Huzhou, with an average annual incidence of 203.74/lakh. The male to female ratio of STD cases was 0.92:1. The cases mainly occurred in sex active young adults aged 20-39 years, accounting for 56.88%. The majority of the cases were farmers, accounting for 49.41%. The average annual incidence reported was highest in Anji county (295.46/lakh). Syphilis had highest case number among 5 STDs, accounting for 48.25%. Conclusion The overall incidence of STDs was in decline, but the incidence of syphilis was in increase in Huzhou. It is necessary to further conduct effective intervention to prevent and control syphilis and other STDs.
