Trend of HIV/AIDS epidemic among drug users in Guangxi zhuang autonomous region, 2007-2012

  • Objective To understand the infection status of HIV and related risk behaviors among the drug users in Guangxi from 2007 to 2012. Methods HIV sentinel surveillance system was established in Guangxi. The annual face to face interview was conducted among drug users sampled in communities and drug rehabilitation center during April-July to obtain their demographic and behavioral information, and blood samples (3-5 ml) were drawn to conduct HIV, syphilis, HCV tests. Software SPSS 20.0 was used for data analysis. Results The HIV positive rate (Median) increase the drug users declined from 13.9% in 2007 to 5.7% in 2012, the syphilis positive rate (Median) increase from 3.4% in 2007 to 6.0% in 2012. The needle sharing rate declined with year, but this rate once reached 14.0% in 2012. The proportion of drug users who had commercial sex increased with year, but the condom use rate increased slightly. Conclusion The HIV infection rate declined with year among the drug users in Guangxi, and the HIV infection through intravenous drug use became less common, but it is still important to strengthen the comprehensive HIV/AIDS intervention targeting drug users.
