HIV/AIDS sentinel surveillance in men who have sex with men in Dalian, Liaoning, 2009-2012

  • Objective To understand the risk factors for HIV infection in men who have sex with men(MSM) in Dalian, Liaoning province and provide evidence to conduct targeted intervention and effective prevention and control of HIV infection in MSM. Methods A face to face questionnaire interview was conducted among MSM recruited by snowball sampling method and the blood samples were collected from them for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis C(HCV) tests. Results The HIV infection rate was 4.48% in 2009,5.00% in 2010,5.47% in 2011 and 12.00% in 2012,which showed a statistically significant increase. Multiple Logistic regression analysis indicated that syphilis was the risk factor of HIV infection, but receiving HIV test in the past year and persistent condom use were the protected factors. Conclusion High HIV infection rate and high risk behaviors were observed among the MSM in Dalian. It is necessary to conduct targeted intervention to prevent the spread of HIV in MSM.
