Sentinel surveillance for injury in Dalian, 2011-2012

  • Objective To understand the epidemiological characteristics of injury in Dalian during 2011-2012 and provide evidence for the development of injury prevention and control strategy. Methods The injury surveillance data reported by 3 sentinel hospitals in Dalian during 2011-2012 were collected and classified according to the WHO injury surveillance criteria for the purpose of statistical analysis. Results A total of 43 472 injury cases were reported in Dalian during this period. The male to female ratio of the cases was 1.83:1, and the cases were mainly aged 25-44 years (42.68%). The injuries were mainly caused by blunt strike (33.50%), fall (28.26%), sharp instrument cut (18.57%) and motor vehicle accident (14.02%). And the injuries mainly occurred on road/street (25.92%), at public places (23.15%) and at industry/construction sites (17.25%). Most cases were unintentional and mild injuries (81.30%, 75.92%, respectively). Conclusion It is necessary to conduct targeted population and cause specific injury intervention, especially for the falls in people aged 0-14 years and 65 years and for the traffic accidents in all age groups.
