Constituent of pathogens causing hand foot and mouth disease and genetic characteristics of Coxsackie virus A 16 in Yuyao, 2010-2012

  • Objective To understand the constituent of pathogens causing hand foot and mouth disease (HFMD) and the genetic characteristics of Coxsackie virus A 16 (Cox A16). Methods The stool samples collected from HFMD patients were detected with real time fluorescence polymerase chain reaction. Several stool samples were selected every year to conduct the VP1 gene amplification and nucleotide sequencing of Cox A16, and the sequencing results were compared and analyzed with software DNAstar and Blast. Results From 2010 to 2012, a total of 1651 stool samples were detected, in which 25.86% were Cox A16 positive, 39.85% were EV71 positive and 19.38% were other enterovirus positive. The VP1 protein amino acid sequence of the Cox A16 strains detected shared 99.3% to 100% similarity. The 7 Cox A16 strains belonged to genotype B1. Conclusion Cox A16 and EV71 were the predominant pathogens causing HFMD in Yuyao during 2010-2012, and the circulating Cox A16 belonged to genotype B1 with high similarity.
