Risk factors for chronic diseases among residents in Chuanshan district of Suining, Sichuan 2013

Objective To understand the major risk factors for chronic diseases among residents in Chuanshan district of Suining, Sichuan province. Methods Questionnaire survey was conducted among the subjects selected through multi-stage stratified cluster sampling, while the physical examination, including body height, weight and waist measurements, was performed for them. Results Among the subjects surveyed, the smoking rate was 21.10%, the alcohol use rate was 25.80%, the rate of overweight was 24.55%, the prevalence of obesity was 5.05%, the prevalence of hypertension was 19.45%(standardized prevalence: 12.10%) and the prevalence of diabetes mellitus was 6.00%(standardized prevalence: 3.40%). Conclusion Among the people aged 18 years in Chuanshan, smoking, alcohol use, high salt diet, lack of physical activity, overweight and obesity are the main risk factors for chronic diseases.
