Surveillance for adverse events following immunization in Dongtai, Jiangsu,2008-2013

  • Objective To understand the incidence of adverse events following immunization (AEFI) in Dongtai, Jiangsu province, and evaluate the performance of AEFI surveillance system and vaccination safety. Methods Descriptive epidemiological analysis was conducted on the surveillance data of AEFI in Dongtai during 2008-2013. Results A total of 847 AEFI cases were reported, the overall incidence was 8.78 per 10 000 doses. The age specific incidence was 16.39 per 10 000 doses in children aged 1 year and 4.71 per 10 000 doses in children aged 1 year. The difference was statistical significant (2=309.28,P0.05). The first 3 vaccines with high incidences of AEFI were TD (53.80 per 10 000 doses), MR (19.79 per 10 000 doses), DTaP (17.92 per 10 000 doses). Among the AEFI cases, 806 were mild reactions (95.16%), 39 were serious reactions (4.6%). The cases in age group 1 year accounted for 35.30% and the cases in age group 1 year accounted for 28.81%. The male to female ratio of cases was 1.48:1. Up to 728 cases occurred within days after vaccination(85.95%). Conclusion The sensitivity of local AEFI surveillance system was high, but the surveillance quality still needs to be further improved.
