Survey of brucellosis awareness and related behaviors in population engaged in goat raising in Pinghu, Zhejiang

  • Objective To understand the brucellosis related knowledge awareness and related behaviors among the population engaged in goat raising in Pinghu, Zhejiang province, and provide evidence for the improvement of brucellosis prevention and control. Methods A household survey was conducted by using the questionnaire designed according to National Brucellosis Surveillance Protocol. Results Among the 41 people surveyed, the awareness rate of brucellosis was 58.27%, the awareness rate of human infection with Brucella was 51.22%, the awareness rate of human infection route was 68.29%, the awareness rate of domestic animal infection with Brucella was 68.29% and the awareness rate of standard procedure for sick animal and apoblema disposals was 85.37%. The people with proper hygienic habits accounted for 83.74%. The survey rate of raised goats was 10.32%, no positive goats were detected. A total of 104 samples were collected from people with occupation exposure to goats, no recent infection cases were detected. Conclusion Both the awareness rate of brucellosis related knowledge and the prevalence of hygienic habits were not high among the population engaged in goat raising in Pinghu, it is necessary to strengthen the health education about brucellosis prevention and control in population with occupational exposure to Brucella. The sampling survey rate was low in goats. It is suggested to improve the goat quarantine to prevent the importation of sick goats.
