Sentinel surveillance for HIV in female sex workers in Dinghai district of Zhoushan,Zhejiang,2014

Objective To understand the awareness of AIDS related knowledge, AIDS risk behaviors and the prevalence of HIV infection, syphilis and HCV infection in female sex workers (FSWs) in Dinghai district of Zhoushan, Zhejiang province, and provide evidence for the comprehensive prevention and intervention of AIDS. Methods According to the national AIDS sentinel surveillance protocol,the questionnaire survey and serological detections of HIV, syphilis and HCV antibodies were conducted in 402 FSWs in Dinghai,2014. Results The prevalence of syphilis was 1.2%,but no HIV and HCV positive FSWs were detected,the grade and condom usage specific differences in syphilis prevalence were statistically significant(2=5.940,P=0.024;2=7.990,P=0.021).The awareness rate of AIDS related knowledge was high (97.3%),but unbalanced, especially in low grade FSWs it was low. The length of local residence was the main factor influencing AIDS related knowledge awareness in the FSWs. The condom use rate was low and it was slightly higher in low grade FSWS than in high grade FSWs, the differences were not statistically significant(P 0.05). Logistic regression analysis indicated that the condom use was associated with age. The grade specific differences in receiving services of AIDS prevention during the past year was statistically significant(P 0.001). Conclusion The awareness of AIDS related knowledge among FSWs was unbalanced, the availability of receiving health education among low grade FSWS was low,and condom use was still at a low level.It is necessary to strengthen both the AIDS intervention and the health education about AIDS prevention and control in FSWs. Especially in the low grade FSWs to reduce the risk behaviors.
