Surveillance for adverse events following immunization in Huanggang,2005-2013

  • Objective To understand the incidence pattern of adverse events following Immunization(AEFI) in Huanggang during 2005-2013, and evaluate the performance of AEFI information management system and the immunization safety.Methods Descriptive epidemiological analysis was conducted on the incidence data of AEFI in Huanggang during this period which were collected from national AEFI information management system.Results A total of 644 AEFI cases were reported in 10 counties(district).The cases reported within 48 hours accounted for 88.04%,and cases surveyed within 48 hours accounted for 95.13%.The male to female ratio of the cases was 1.62:1.The cases aged 1 year accounted for 66.77%.The estimated overall incidence of AEFI was 5.26 per 100 000 doses,the estimated rare reaction incidence was 1.16 per 100 000 doses.AEFI mainly occurred in age group 5-9 months. In all the AEFI,the common vaccination reactions were fever, local swelling and indurations,the rare reactions were anaphylactic rash and lymphadenitis of BCG vaccine. AEFI usually occurred within 1 day after vaccination.Of all the AEFI, 97.05% were cured or mitigated.Conclusion The sensitivity of national AEFI surveillance was improved greatly.AEFI usually occurred in young children within 1 day after vaccination.It is still necessary to further improve the sensitivity and quality of AEFI surveillance.
