Carriage of CTX-M type extended-spectrum -lactamase in intestinal bacteria isolated from people engaged in food processing

  • Objective To investigate the carriage and genotypes of CTX-M type extended-spectrum -lactamase (ESBLs) in the intestinal bacteria isolated from people engaged in food processing. Methods A total of 140 rectal swabs were collected from the people engaged in food processing. For each swab, ceftriaxone resistant bacteria were isolated using nutrient agar plateadding ceftriaxone sodium.blaCTX-M genes were detected by PCR for each strains. The genotypes of CTX-M were identified by sequencing of PCR positive amplification products. Results Ceftriaxoneresistant strains were successfully isolated from 125 of 140 stool samples (89.3%, 125/140). Among the 125 strains, 122(122/125, 97.6%) strains carried blaCTX-M genes. The CTX-M-9 group (56.0%, 70/125) was predominant, followed by the CTX-M-1 group (38.4%). Four strains harbored both CTX-M-1 group genes and CTX-M-9 group genes. The predominant genotypes of CTX-Menzyme were CTX-M-14 and CTX-M-15. Conclusion -lactam resistant strains harboring CTX-M type ESBLs were commonly found from healthy people engaged in food processing. Considering their close contact with food, more attention should be paid to the high risk of spreading these ESBLs resistant bacteria during their working process.
