Correlation between serum gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase and blood pressure, blood lipids and blood glucose in coal miners receiving occupational health examination

  • Objective To understand the correlation between serum gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT)level and metabolic syndrome (MS) in coal miners. Methods A total of 2372 coal miners in Handan were recruited in this study, the detection of their body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels were conducted. The coal miners were divided into four groups according to the quartiles of their serum GGT levels. The correlation between the serum GGT level and systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), FPG, TG, TC, HDL-C levels and BMI were analyzed with SPSS 17.0 statistical software. Results The differences in serum GGT level among the coal miners with different age, SBP, DBP, TC, TG, HDL-C, FPG levels and BMI were significant (P0.001), As the increase of serum GGT level, the SBP, DBP, TC, TG, FPG levels and BMI increased, but the HDL-C declined. Pearson analysis indicated that the serum GGT level was positively correlated with age, TG, TC, FPG, SBP, DBP levels and BMI (r=0.110,0.313,0.352,0.163,0.174,0.141,0.212), but negatively correlated with HDL-C in this population(P0.01). Multivariate regression analysis showed that the TG, TC, FPG, SBP levels and HGB were the factors associated with serum GGT levels in this population ( value 0.215, 0.274, 0.100, 0.098,0.077). Conclusion The serum GGT level was significantly correlated with blood pressure, blood lipids level and blood glucose level in the coal miners surveyed, which can be used as reference for the early diagnosis of MS.
