Risk assessment of wild poliovirus importation and transmission in Yunnan province,2016

Objective To assess the risk of wild poliovirus importation and transmission at prefecture level in Yunnan province in 2016,and provide evidence for the development and implementation of strategies or policies to keep polio-free status in Yunnan province. Methods Based on the wild poliovirus importation and transmission risk assessment tool developed by China CDC, we used a revised risk assessment tool with primary and secondary indicators to conduct comprehensive analysis on the risk of wild poliovirus importation and transmission at prefecture level in Yunnan province.Each primary assessment indicator contained several secondary assessment indicators.The risk of wild poliovirus importation and transmission were scored. Results We performed the assessment in terms of herd immunity, performance of acute flaccid paralysis surveillance and importation risk of wild poliovirus. The assessment indicated that Xishuangbanna, Lincang, Honghe, Wenshan Zhaotong, prefectures were at high risk due to the high scores, Yuxi and other 5 prefectures were at medium risk; and Dali and other 4 prefectures were at low risks. Conclusion We divided the risk of wild poliovirus importation and transmission in Yunnan province into 3 levels. According to the results of risk assessment, different strategies for polio control and prevention should be developed to keep polio-free status in Yunnan.
