Surveillance for child injury in a hospital in Nanshan district of Shenzhen,2012-2016

  • Objective To understand the child injury hospitalization in an injury sentinel hospital in Nanshan district of Shenzhen,Guangdong province, and provide scientific evidence for the prevention and control of injury in children. Methods A descriptive study was used to analyze the medical records of child injury hospitalization in the hospital from 2012 to 2016. Results A total of 1 052 person-times of children were hospitalized due to injury in the sentinel hospital during this period, accounting for 7.27% of the total person-times of hospitalization due to injury. The male to female ratio of the cases was 2.31:1. The proportion of child injury hospitalization decreased year by year. The first 3 age groups with high injury hospitalization case number were 17 years,1 year and 2 years, and the last 3 age groups with low injury hospitalization case number were 10 years,9 years and 11 years. The hospitalization person times in children aged 10 years increased with year. The first 4 injury causes were empyrosis(32.09%),fall(23.07%),exposure to inanimate mechanical forces(16.55%)and traffic accident(14.04%). The top 4 injury consequences were burn and corrosion(31.78%),upper limbs injury(21.52%), head injury(15.00%),lower limbs injury(14.86%). The average hospitalization fee per day per person increased year by year. The total hospitalization fee per person was positively correlated with the hospitalization time, (r=0.660). Age was positively correlated with average hospitalization fee per day per person (r=0.392) and hospitalization time per person (r=0.142). Conclusion The characteristics of child injury differed with age in Nanshan district. The incidence of child injury were positively correlated with age,and more cases occurred in boys than in girls. It is necessary to take targeted prevention and control measures in population at high risk.
