Laboratory evaluation and application analysis for four national standard Campylobacter strains

  • Objective  To obtain the pathogenic characteristics of four standard strains of Campylobacter jejuni, Campylobacter coli, Campylobacter upsaliensis and Campylobacter lari, and evaluate the results of isolation and identification for Campylobacter detection with the standard methods using these strains as references according to the Technical Requirements for Evaluation of National Standard Strains of Pathogenic Microorganisms(WS/T 812—2022).
Methods  The colony on the medium, morphological, biochemical, and motility characteristics were investigated by the standard and universally accepted methods. The genomic profiles of these strains were obtained by genome sequencing and bioinformatic analysis. The antibiotic susceptibility of these strains was tested by agar diffusion and E-test methods. The application of these four strains as reference was evaluated by the detection standards of C. jejuni and C. coli.
Results  The characteristics of C. jejuni NPRC(S) 01.13897, C. coli NPRC(S) 01.13898, C. upsaliensis NPRC(S) 01.13899, and C. lari NPRC(S) 01.13900 were well consistent with the related species of Campylobacter. Higher specificity and sensitivity were obtained as references for Campylobacter detection.
Conclusion  These four standard strains hold the characteristics of corresponding species and could be used as reference strains for Campylobacter isolation and identification.
