Objective This study conducted bibliometric analysis of relevant literature in the field of Competency-based global health education, to understand the current research status, explore the latest progress and research trends in the field of Competency-based global health education, and provide support for building a global health education training system based on global health competences in China.
Methods Using Web of Science as the data source, using VOSviewer and CiteSpace as visualization tools, this study searched English literature related to Competency-based global health education published between 2016 and 2023, and analyzed the publication time, country, key words, institution, discipline category and cited times of the literature.
Results The organization with the highest number of publications and citations in the field is the World Health Organization. The number of publications, citations, and funding frequency in the United States and the United Kingdom are at a leading level. The research hotspots mainly focus on six clusters, including medical education and training, capacity building and health system strengthening, health manpower and health policies. The specific content is mostly related to defining the core competencies required for global health and constructing the competency system. Core competencies focus on global competencies on the one hand, professional skills on the other hand, and another set of competency areas can be classified as “soft skills”.
Conclusion Strengthen the construction of global health research and teaching in higher education institutions, strengthen cooperation with developed countries in the field of global health education, adopt interdisciplinary and cross professional cooperation methods to cultivate global health talents, not only focus on technical skills, but also on cross-cultural communication skills and leadership, and tailor global health education that meets one's own national conditions and external needs.
