Epidemiology of hepatitis E in Ningbo,1999 - 2008

Objective To analyze the epidemiological characteristics of hepatitis E in Ningbo, and provide scientific evidence for the prevention and control of the disease. Methods Descriptive epidemiological analysis was conducted on the data of hepatitis E surveillance in Ningbo. Results From 1999 to 2008, the average incidence rate of hepatitis E was 2.56/lakh; the average incidence rate of hepatitis E in urban area was higher than that in rural area; The disease mainly occurred in spring and summer and peaked during January-May; Hepatitis E cases were reported in all 11 counties in Ningbo, but higher incidences were observed in some counties or districts. The cases were mainly the adults aged from 40 to 59 year and the incidence among them showed a increase trend. Conclusion It is necessary to strengthen the control of viral hepatitis E and the management of food and water sources.
