Prevalence of HIV infection among men having sex with men in two cities, Henan province

Objective To understand the prevalence of HIV infection among men having sex with men (MSM) in different places getting together in two cities in Henan province and provide scientific evidence for the epidemic estimation and effective prevention strategy development. Methods The anonymous questionnaire survey was conducted among 1350 MSM by directional sampling in the different places in two cities to collect related information. Blood samples were taken from them for HIV antibody test, and the data was analyzed by SPSS 17.0. Results Of 1350 MSM, 70 were HIV positive, the overall HIV infection rate was 5.2%. The HIV infection rates among MSM in bathhouses, barrooms, park and internet bars were 10.6%, 5.9%, 3.5% and 2.7% respectively. The overall condom use rate was 39.9%. Conclusion The prevalence of HIV infection was high among the MSM, the prevention and control of HIV infection should be strengthened among them. The differences on HIV infection rates among MSM in different places were statistical significant. Active and effective prevention and control measures should be taken according to the behavior characteristics of the MSM.
