HIV/AIDS epidemic in Zhejiang province, 1985 - 2009

Objective To analyze the epidemiological characteristics of HIV/AIDS epidemic and related factors in Zhejiang, provide scientific evidence for developing intervention strategies. Methods The statistical analysis was conducted on the data of 5119 HIV/AIDS cases. Results By the end of 2009, a total of 5119 HIV/AIDS cases had been reported accumulatively, of which 1261 were AIDS cases, 533 were fatal. The cases in males accounted for 68.9% and in females accounted for 31.1%. Up to 86.0% of infected cases occurred in age group of 20-49 years old. The main transmission route was sexual contact, accounting for 63.5%, followed by injection drug use (17.2%). Conclusion Fast spread of HIV/AIDS epidemic was observed in Zhejiang, and more areas were involved. The transmission routes had become multiple. The sexual transmitted cases increased dramatically, the epidemic had began to spread from high-risk population to general population.
