Distribution of measles cases and risk factors among adults in Zhejiang province

  • Objective To understand the epidemiological characteristics of measles cases in adults and related risk factors, provide evidence for the development of measles elimination strategies. Methods Descriptive epidemiological analysis was conducted on the incidence data of measles in adults in 2010 in Zhejiang collected from national measles surveillance information management system. 2 test was conducted to compare the difference on case distribution, frequency matching case control study was performed (case group: measles cases reported by surveillance system, control group: non measles cases) and logistic regression analysis was conducted on risk factors. Results The cases in people aged 15 years accounted for 40% of the total and were mainly distributed in age group of 20-35 years old, Compared with people unvaccinated, The OR of contracting measles for people vaccinated was 0.35 (95% CI:0.22-0.58), the OR for people visiting hospital 7 days prior to onset was 2.82 (95% CI:1.99-4.00), and compared with local population, the OR for floating population was 1.55 (95% CI:1.17-2.04). Conclusion The measles cases in adults were mainly distributed in age group of 20-35 years old in Zhejiang. Nosocominal infection and being floating population were the risk factors. As measles vaccination is an effective protective measure, it is suggested to conduct adult Immunization to control the nosocominal infection and measles in floating population.
