Management of tuberculosis in Taizhou city in Zhejiang province,2001-2010

Objective To evaluate the effect of management of tuberculosis (TB) in Taizhou from 2001 to 2010. Methods Retrospective analysis was conducted on the surveillance data of tuberculosis in the last decade. Results From 2001 to 2010, 35 849 cases of active pulmonary TB were detected, the registering rate was 63.83/lakh; and 14 186 new smear-positive TB cases were detected, the registering rate was 25.26/lakh. Up to 97.41% of new TB cases were the patients by referral or patients seeking medical care due to symptoms. The negative conversion rate of smear positive cases at the end of the 2nd month had increased with years since 2003. The cure rate was 85% in smear positive cases and 86.09% in new smear positive cases. Conclusion Although marked achievement has been made in TB control and prevention, the situation is still serious. It is necessary to increase the investment, strengthen the DOTS supervision, health education about TB and the TB prevention and control in floating population.
