Detection of Vibrio vulnificus in stool samples from diarrhea patients in Zhejiang province

  • Objective To understand the infection status of Vibrio vulnificus in diarrhea patients in selected areas in Zhejiang. Methods The alkaline peptone water with 3% NaCl was used to enrich the target pathogen in stool samples at 37 ℃ for 6 to 9 hours, a loop of enrichment broth was streaked to cellobiose polymyxin E plate and cultivated at 40 ℃ for 18 to 24 hours, and the suspicious clones were isolated for identification and genotyping. Results Two Vibrio vulnificus strains were isolated from 144 stool samples (1.39%), they belonged to biotypeⅠand vcgC/16S rRNA B genotype. The drug susceptibility test indicated that the 2 Vibrio vulnificus strains were resistant to aminoglycoside antibiotics, which included amikacin and gentamicin. Conclusion The strains of Vibrio vulnificus with strong virulence and drug resistance were isolated from the stool samples of diarrhea patients. It is necessary to strengthen the detection of Vibrio vulnificus in sea foods and stool samples from diarrhea patients and the analysis of its drug resistance to prevent the outbreak of Vibrio vulnificus infection.
