Surveillance of other infectious diarrheal diseases in China,2010

  • Objective To understand the etiological and epidemiological characteristics of infectious diarrheal diseases other than cholera, dysentery, typhoid and paratyphoid (hereinafter referred to as other infectious diarrheal diseases) in China in 2010. Methods The incidence data of other infectious diarrheal diseases in China in 2010 were collected from national diseases reporting information system to conduct descriptive epidemiological analysis. Results A total of 746 551 cases of other infectious diarrheal diseases were reported, including 43 deaths, in which 399 897 cases, including 23 deaths, occurred in children aged 5 years old. Totally 48 200 cases were laboratory-confirmed, accounting for 6.46% of the total. Among these cases, viral infection accounted for 93%, bacterial infection accounted for 6.99%, co-infection of two pathogens accounted for 0.23% and other pathogens infection accounted for 0.01%. Conclusion Children aged 5 year old and children outside child care settings are the key populations in other infectious diarrheal diseases surveillance. The reporting rate and the etiological diagnosis rate of infectious diarrheal diseases should be increased in China.
